  • 2.75 cups all-purpose flour Sifted for best results
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter Softened
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Icing Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons meringue powder
  • as needed tablespoons water To reach desired consistency
  • optional food coloring For decorating

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into heart shapes.
  • Place the hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow to cool completely before icing.

Icing

  • Mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until desired icing consistency is achieved.
  • Decorate cooled cookies and allow the icing to dry completely.

Notes

For a fun twist, consider adding chocolate chips to the cookie dough or using almond extract instead of vanilla. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for up to three months.
