Ingredients
  

For the Patties

  • 1 lb Ground beef Use 80% lean for optimal flavor.
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp Onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 medium Yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter For sautéing.
  • 1 tsp Olive oil For sautéing.
  • 1 pinch Salt

For the Secret Sauce

  • 0.5 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Finely diced pickles Or relish.
  • 0.5 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder

For Assembly

  • 8 slices Rye bread (or sourdough) Choose your favorite.
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar) For variation.
  • 2 tbsp Softened butter For spreading on the bread.

Preparing the Caramelized Onions

  • In a skillet, gently melt the unsalted butter with olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced yellow onions and a pinch of salt, stirring often.
  • Cook for about 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.

Making the Patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix gently and divide into four thin patties.
  • Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.

Creating the Secret Sauce

  • In a bowl, stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickles, smoked paprika, and garlic powder until smooth.

Assembling the Patty Melts

  • Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  • On the unbuttered side, place a slice of cheese, then a beef patty, caramelized onions, a spoonful of secret sauce, another slice of cheese, and top with another slice of bread.
  • Heat the skillet or griddle over medium heat and grill each sandwich for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Notes

For a lighter version, use low-fat ground beef. Customize with fresh herbs or different types of cheese. Leftover sandwiches can be stored in the fridge for up to three days.
