For the Turkey

  • 1 whole whole turkey (12-14 pounds) Choose a fresh or thawed turkey.
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensures a rich flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper Freshly ground for best flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme Could substitute with fresh thyme.
  • 4 cups chicken broth Keep turkey moist while roasting.
  • to taste fresh herbs (optional) Such as rosemary, sage, or parsley for garnish.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  • In a bowl, mix half a cup of softened butter with two tablespoons of salt, one tablespoon of black pepper, one tablespoon of garlic powder, one tablespoon of onion powder, and one tablespoon of dried thyme until combined.
  • Pat the turkey dry with a soft cloth to ensure a crisp skin.
  • Rub the butter mixture all over the turkey, including under the skin for deeper flavor.

Roasting

  • Place the turkey on a roasting rack in a large roasting pan to allow heat circulation.
  • Pour in four cups of chicken broth to keep moisture while roasting.
  • Cover the turkey loosely with aluminum foil to prevent drying.
  • Roast for 3 to 3.5 hours, removing the foil for the last 30 minutes to allow the skin to brown.
  • Check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part.

Finishing Touches

  • Remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes before carving.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve alongside your favorite Thanksgiving sides.

Notes

If the turkey isn't browning as expected, increase the oven temperature slightly during the final stages of cooking, but keep a close eye to prevent drying.
