Dough Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm milk Should be warm for yeast activation.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast To help the dough rise.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar To help activate the yeast.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar For sweetness in the dough.
  • 2 large eggs Adds richness to the dough.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Enhances flavor and texture.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Main structure of the donuts.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For flavor.
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola oil For frying the donuts.

Preparation

  • Combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, combine granulated sugar, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and mix well.
  • Gradually fold in the all-purpose flour and salt until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then cover and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • After rising, punch down the dough and roll it out to 1/2 inch thickness on a floured surface.
  • Cut out donut shapes and place them on a floured surface, allowing them to rest for 15-20 minutes.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry each donut for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Notes

Donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but can be made in advance. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
