  • 1 pinch salt Enhances flavors
  • 1 small cinnamon stick Optional, for warming spice
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon Optional, for additional warmth

Preparation

  • Gently rinse your cranberries under cool water.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, and water or orange juice.
  • Stir in a pinch of salt and the optional orange zest.

Cooking

  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Optionally, introduce a cinnamon stick or a pinch of ground cinnamon in the last two minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if desired.
  • Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before transferring to a bowl.

Cooling and Serving

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.

Notes

If the sauce seems too thick after chilling, whisk in one to two tablespoons of hot water to achieve your desired consistency. This sauce is great as a side for turkey, ham, or as a topping for cheese.
