For the cookie dough

  • 7 tablespoons softened butter must be softened for easier mixing
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon red gel food coloring for vibrant color
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup red sanding sugar for coating
  • 18 pieces Hershey's Chocolate Kisses unwrapped

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg yolk, vanilla extract, and red gel food coloring to the mixture, and mix until combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  • Roll the dough into 18 small balls, coating each in red sanding sugar before placing them on the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake the cookies for about 10 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers remain soft.
  • Immediately press a Hershey's Kiss into the center of each cookie while they are still warm.
  • Allow cookies to cool before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

For added flavor, consider introducing a pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder. Ensure cookies cool slightly before adding chocolate kisses to maintain their shape.
