Ingredients

Dough ingredients

  • 1.5 cups warm water Ensure the water is warm but not hot to activate the yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast This is equivalent to 2.25 teaspoons.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat flour for a healthier option.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cups baking soda Used in the boiling process to create pretzel texture.
  • 1 large egg, beaten For brushing on top.
  • coarse sea salt For topping.
  • shredded cheese Preferably cheddar, but feel free to use your favorite.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Allow to sit until frothy.
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms, kneading for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  • Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with a cloth for one hour, allowing it to double in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll the risen dough into small balls and create a hole in each ball to fill with cheese.
  • Boil water and add baking soda. Drop the filled dough balls into the water bath for 30 seconds before removing.
  • Place the dough bites on the lined baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with sea salt.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
